Den rika familjen Hillcrist för en strid med släkten Hornblower, som köper ut fattiga bönder för att bygga fabriker på deras marker. När fru Hillcrist får reda på att Chloe Hornblower varit prostituerad, använder hon den hemligheten för att utpressa familjen till att stoppa sin verksamhet.
